According to a statement from the Government Chancellery, Sinkevičius thanked the United States for its active diplomatic engagement in resolving issues relating to Belarus.
The prime minister emphasised that his government supports US diplomatic efforts towards Belarus and recognises their significance not only from a humanitarian perspective but also from a strategic regional security perspective.
„Apart from the humanitarian aspect of your activities, the Lithuanian Government particularly appreciates the fact that Washington is paying attention to the security of Lithuania and our entire region. US diplomatic engagement helps mitigate hybrid threats and growing tensions in the region, thereby contributing to greater stability and security. This is particularly important in these turbulent times,“ Sinkevičius is quoted as saying in the statement.
The prime minister asked that his thanks be conveyed to US President Donald Trump for his efforts to strengthen Lithuania's and the region's security. Sinkevičius also asked him to rest assured that Lithuania would remain a loyal US ally.
Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys also met with Coale this week.
As reported by ELTA, during his visit to Minsk on Wednesday, Mr Coale announced that, through mediation with the US, Belarus would release 25 political prisoners, whilst the United States would lift sanctions on two companies in the isolated country.
Washington has resumed dialogue with Minsk and eased some of the sanctions. Since Donald Trump’s return to the White House following Mr Coale’s visits to Belarus, several phases of prisoner releases have already taken place.
Coale told Reuters that he intends to visit Minsk again in a month and hopes to secure the release of several hundred more prisoners.
