In the past 12 months, 56% of SMEs in the capital have noticed an increased focus on sustainability from customers and partners, while 52% have observed growing interest among employees and job candidates Another 16% indicate they feel strong pressure from customers to act on sustainability. These data were revealed by a survey initiated by real estate developer Darnu Group and conducted by market research company Spinter Research in January.

According to the survey, half of businesses believe that more sustainable solutions would help attract customers (24%), employees (17%), and partners (9%).
„For some time now, sustainability for business has been more than an environmental concern, a reputational factor, or a communication theme. It has become a significant operational criterion, directly linked to practicality and business efficiency: meeting customer expectations, shaping employee attitudes, organizing logistical operations, and managing operational costs,“ says Mykolas Čiplys, Head of Sales and Rental at Darnu Group.
Logistics and the social sector – the biggest potential for sustainability improvements
While companies’ attitudes toward sustainability are improving, businesses recognise that challenges they face demand practical solutions rather than symbolic ones.
The greatest potential for sustainability improvements lies in the social sector – ensuring workers’ welfare and equal opportunities (49%) – and in logistics, through more sustainable transport and shorter supply chains (46%). Larger companies, as well as manufacturing and physical services businesses, tend to see the greatest sustainability potential in logistics, while companies that lease premises focus more on opportunities in upgrading or renovating their spaces.
According to the Darnu Group's study, well-chosen premises can be one of the most practical ways to address social welfare, logistics, and other sustainability challenges. The survey found that 51% of companies operate from a single location, 35% from two, and 14% from three or more.
According to Čiplys, 77% of businesses considering new premises say it is important to concentrate retail, administrative, warehousing, and production functions in a single location. Among companies with more than one location, over a half (53%) estimate that consolidating operations in a single location could save 6–20% in costs. He noted that this indicates that the market appreciates not only space, but also a functional, integrated solution which translates into lower operating costs.
„In our daily practice, we see that such companies are most often interested in the commercial warehouses we are developing at Vilnius Business Park. For them, the sustainability effect often begins with a simpler operating model — fewer locations mean shorter logistics chains, fewer duplicated processes, more predictable costs, and better employee wellbeing,“ he says.
According to the survey, 30% of businesses think they could optimise how they use resources, such as electricity, in daily operations. The majority of small and medium-sized businesses (81% of respondents) believe they could save up to 40% by moving to newer, more efficient premises.
Darnu Group, the leading company in the segment of stock-office premises in the capital, has developed almost 50,000 sqm of such premises to date. The company is the only one offering clients the option to buy or rent premises with a purchase option.
The survey of small and medium-sized businesses was conducted by market and public opinion research company Spinter Research on behalf of Darnu Group. Representatives of 213 companies operating in Vilnius participated in the survey, which was conducted from 12 to 23 January 2026.
