„We hope to resolve this issue in an extraordinary session,“ Andrius Vyšniauskas, the elder of the Conservative group in the Seimas, told Elta that an extraordinary session is planned for August.
„I think the names are very tangible – these are colleagues who work in foreign policy and are on the same Foreign Affairs Committee. We will sit down and discuss who could be the best candidate,“ he stressed, noting that the Foreign Affairs Committee comprises Conservatives Zingeris and Audronius Ažubalis.
However, Seimas discusses Mr Zingeris, who has chaired the committee several times, as the most realistic candidate for the post of Chairman of the URK. The Elder of the Conservative Group in the Seimas also agrees that Mr Zingeris would be an excellent candidate.
„I think that Emanuelis would be an excellent candidate because he is a signatory, a person with a great deal of experience in the Foreign Affairs Committee, having been on it since the very beginning of independence, and with excellent contacts in international organisations and with parliamentarians from other countries,“ said Mr Vyšniauskas.
„Therefore, I think he would be an excellent candidate. All the more so because he is a moderate and balanced person“, he added.
Mr Zingeris also said he would be ready to take up the post of Chairman of the OHR(URK). However, he said he had yet to discuss the possibility of chairing the committee with the group's leadership.
„Since I have been Chairman of this committee several times, if someone suggested it, I would return to my previous position for an extremely short period. I would try to unite everyone in foreign policy and contribute a little more to the momentum of integration towards the West,“ Zingeris told Elta.
We need a person who has been Chairman of that committee several times and is professionally involved in foreign policy. I could contribute a little with my experience,“ he said.
Previously, the Foreign Affairs Committee was chaired by Conservative Žygimantas Pavilionis. However, last week Pavilionis was confirmed as Vice-Chairman of the Seimas and Head of the European Affairs Committee (ERK). He replaced Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, who had been appointed as Minister of Education, Science and Sport.
