„It's a paradox. The combination of the words Landsbergis and unite is completely incompatible. On the contrary, it would certainly be so if we were talking about division, intrigue and bickering. In any case, I don't see any apocalyptic picture that it should be done in this way,“ Skvernelis told Žinių Radijas on Friday in response to Landsbergis' calls.
„But after the elections, anything can happen“, he said.
Skvernelis said that if the results of the Seimas elections show that the fundamental values of democracies are under real threat, political forces will have to make appropriate value decisions. However, he reiterated there is no reason to worry about this.
„Today, such a scare by radical political forces is more often like a desire to mobilise one's electorate – that if it were not for the Homeland Union, that's it, our country would perish, would dissapear, and there would be some kind of an end to the statehood,“ the former Prime Minister explained the purpose of the statements of the leader of the conservatives.
ELTA recalls that the leader of the Conservatives, Landsbergis, told Elta that he sees a dangerous strengthening of undemocratic forces in Lithuania. In this context, the politician said, parties on the centre-left and right could negotiate to prevent radical troops from coming to power after the autumn elections.
For her part, the leader of the Social Democrats, Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, suggested that the party she leads could form a ruling coalition with many of the political forces currently in place. According to the MEP, the political force Nemuno Aušra (Nemuno Dawn), led by Remigijus Žemaitaitis, is no exception. At the same time, she was not interested in the calls made by Landsbergis, who said that it is not the activity of parties that tend to extremes but the policy of the Conservatives that has alarmed the country's population.
The LSDP's position on a possible coalition with Nemunas Aušra has been sharply criticised, highlighting the fact that the leader of the new political force, Žemaitaitis, has been found by the Constitutional Court (KT) to have broken his oath of office as a member of the Seimas and to have grossly violated the Constitution because of his anti-Semitic remarks.
