„The steps taken in Venezuela are consistent with the implementation of the US National Security Strategy. The US has declared a renewed Monroe Doctrine, which 100 years ago clearly stated that the world is divided between the most powerful empires,“ said Landsbergis on the LRT television program „Savaitė“ on Sunday.
„What would the renewed Monroe Doctrine mean today? It means the division of the world between (...) presumed powers. Reading the National Security Strategy, those powers become clear. Through America's consistent steps and actions, it becomes clear that these are China, Russia, and the US (...).
Venezuela is clearly already in the US's sphere of interest. We also see that Greenland and Canada fall within that sphere and should (...) obey American leadership,“ emphasised the former head of Lithuanian diplomacy.
Therefore, according to him, we should not ignore other publicly stated goals and plans of US leader Donald Trump.
„What the representatives of this administration say must be taken very seriously. We had to learn that lesson in 2016, when many people looked the other way or even joked that Trump would build a wall and take other steps. Everything he promised, in his own way, he sought to do or did to the maximum extent possible,“ Landsbergis said.
„Today, when he says or has said that NATO is irrelevant to him, that he wants friendship with Russia, that Europeans must defend themselves, and all other things—all of this, in my opinion, is either already being implemented in one way or another, or will begin to be implemented in the near future,“ he emphasised.
