“Today, I submitted a request to the Central Election Commission to relinquish my seat in the Seimas. This was not an easy decision, but one I made responsibly. I sincerely thank all voters for their trust and for entrusting me with this mandate. It has been an honour and a responsibility to serve Lithuania in the Seimas.
I also thank my colleagues in the Democratic Union Vardan Lietuvos for their solidarity, constructive work, and the opportunity to contribute to strengthening national security and defence,” he posted on Facebook.
Jeglinskas says he will continue his work in defence.
“Although I am stepping back from active politics, I remain a member of the Democratic Union. I will continue to personally contribute to strengthening security and defence issues in our region by working on the international stage.
I will continue my work as a defence expert. I am joining the network of collaborators at the U.S. geopolitical analysis centre, the Atlantic Council, as well as the high-level working group of the Warsaw Security Forum, whose goal is to provide strategic guidance to strengthen the security of the Nordic and Baltic countries and Poland.
I wish all my colleagues in the Seimas unity and solidarity in making decisions that strengthen the country’s security, resilience, and public welfare,” the politician wrote.
Jeglinskas was elected to the Seimas in a multi-member district based on the party’s candidate list. He is expected to be replaced by Vilija Targamadzė, who finished just behind the cutoff line.
The Central Election Commission will consider the request on Thursday; Targamadzė will take his seat in the Seimas
For its part, the Central Election Commission (VRK) says it received Jeglinskas’s request to revoke his mandate on Monday morning.
“Yes, we can confirm that on April 13 at 8:57 a.m., the Central Election Commission received via email a request from Seimas member Giedrius Jeglinskas to terminate his powers as a Seimas member and revoke his mandate,” the CEC stated in a response to ELTA.
“The issue of terminating a Member of Parliament’s mandate before the end of his term will be included on the agenda of the commission’s next meeting. The meeting is scheduled for this Thursday, April 16,” emphasised commission representatives.
With Jeglinskas having resigned his parliamentary seat, his place in the Seimas is expected to be taken by Targamadzė, a member of the Democratic Union Vardan Lietuvos.
“We have just received confirmation that Ms Targamadzė plans to take up the position of Seimas member,” the Central Election Commission emphasised.
Targamadzė herself says she sees problems in the field of education.
“I thought about it for a very long time. There are many problems in education, and I am an educator—I am considering this opportunity,” Targamadzė told ELTA.
Targamadzė was elected to parliament during the previous term with the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP). However, she later joined the Democratic Union Vardan Lietuvos.
Jeglinskas was elected to the Seimas in 2024 and served as chair of the Parliament’s National Security and Defence Committee (NSGK) until October 2025.
