The Legion of Honour was awarded to the former minister in recognition of his contribution to fostering democracy and the European project, promoting dialogue between nations and strengthening relations between France and Lithuania.
„France values the contribution of women and men who tirelessly defend the universal values on which our democracies are founded. By presenting you with this award this evening, France honours a dedicated and invaluable partner who builds bridges between our two nations. This Order of the Legion of Honour is also a recognition of your contribution to the strong friendship between France and Lithuania and to the intellectual dialogue that enriches it,“ emphasised Stepanyan in her speech.
Upon receiving the award, Landsbergis thanked France for its support of Lithuania and Ukraine, emphasising that Lithuania’s support for countries fighting for freedom stems not only from geopolitical interests but also from Lithuania’s own history.
„We regained our independence not so long ago, so we easily recognise the desire to be free when we see it in others. In many cases, Lithuania’s support for people fighting for freedom in Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, and even Hong Kong or Taiwan has stemmed not from a simple geopolitical calculation, but from an instinctive recognition of ourselves in others,“ emphasised Landsbergis.
He also stressed that, given the threat posed by Russia, partnerships with allies are particularly important for Lithuania.
„Now, everything we have worked for is once again under threat. This is not an abstract threat – it is painfully real. That is why we value our partnerships so highly,“ noted the former minister.
Mr Landsbergis also thanked France for its stance in supporting Ukraine. He recalled French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement in 2024 that Ukraine should not be left on its own, with Russian forces threatening to break through the front line.
„If France was prepared to do this for Ukraine, then we in Lithuania also felt more at ease. I therefore thank France and its people for far more than the great honour bestowed upon me today,“ said Landsbergis.
The ceremony took place on Thursday at the French Ambassador’s residence in Vilnius. It was attended by the former Foreign Minister’s family, colleagues and other guests.
Mr Landsbergis served as Foreign Minister from 2020 to 2024.
