Public opinion polls: Confidence in Nausėda has dropped

In the first few months of this year, the public's trust in President Gitanas Nausėda has dropped by 4 percentage points, according to the latest poll by Baltic Research commissioned by Elta. It now stands at 20.9%, while 24.9% of respondents expressed confidence in the current Head of State in the last month of last year. Nevertheless, Nausėda remains the most trusted public figure.

The survey was conducted between 22 February and 5 March, and respondents were asked which Lithuanian public figures they trusted the most. Respondents were asked to name their own.

The second most trusted public figure was Andrius Tapinas. 7.3% of respondents expressed trust in him. Last December, those who thought so were 5.4 percent.

In third place in the table of public trust ratings is the leader of the Social Democrats, Vilija Blinkevičiūtė – 6.3% of respondents expressed support for her (6.4% last December). Fourth is Saulius Skvernelis, Chairman of the Democratic Union In the Name of Lithuania, supported by 6.2% of respondents (6.4% last December).

The fifth most trusted politician was former President Dalia Grybauskaitė, who has been in office for two terms, with a 6% favourable rating in the poll (compared to 7.5% last December). The sixth most popular candidate was Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, rated 5.6% in February (3.6% in December last year). Former President Valdas Adamkus, who has completed his term of office, remained among the most trusted persons in the public. 4.2% of respondents expressed confidence in him (4.9% in December last year).

The top ten most trusted politicians were also the attorney Ignas Vėgėlė, who is running for the presidency with 3.7% confidence (compared to 2% last December), the resigning Minister of National Defence, Arvydas Anušauskas, with 3.5%. The survey also showed that the parliamentarian Remigijus Žemaitaitis had a favourable opinion of 3.4% of respondents (compared to 1.9% in December last year).

Three out of ten (29%) respondents answered that there were no public figures they trusted or did not answer this question at all.

The survey took place between 22 February and 5 March 2024. It involved 1,021 respondents (aged 18 and over) in Lithuania, who were interviewed by personal interview at 115 sampling points. The composition of the respondents corresponds to the composition of the adult population of Lithuania in terms of gender, age, nationality, and type of settlement. The people surveyed reflect the opinion of the Lithuanian population aged 18 and over. The margin of error of the survey results is up to 3.1%.
