Blinkevičiūtė says that Nausėda rushed when mentioning the future Prime Minister, so maybe he hastened events a bit. She made it clear that she would not give up her mandate as an MEP

Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, Chairwoman of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), says that President Gitanas Nausėda was hasty when he hinted that in the event of a victory of the left-wing political forces in the Seimas elections, he would try to persuade her to become Prime Minister. The politician, who avoids disclosing her prospects for her political future, assures that all decisions will be taken in due course.

As previously reported, during an interview with Elta after the first round of the presidential elections, the Head of State did not rule out the possibility of trying to persuade the LSDP Chairwoman to take over the post of Head of Government.

„This is something that I value very much, and that is very significant, binding, and with great responsibility. But, again, let's see – perhaps a bit premature. From that long political experience, I would say that it may have speed things up a bit, let us call it that. But I have always said that we need to wait for the will of our people and our voters,“ Blinkevičiūtė said in an interview on the programme ELTA Angle.

„I will say it in a banal way – when these crowns are put on in advance, I am even discouraged and shaken by such things, as are many voters. It is still too early for such a thing,“ she added.

Although she made it clear during the debate that she would not give up her mandate as an MEP, she points out that this does not mean anything yet

The politician remains reluctant to say whether she will take the Social Democratic Party list to Seimas in October, explaining that the answer she gave in one debate to whether she would remain in the European Parliament (EP) after the parliamentary elections does not mean anything.

„Nothing (no signal – ELTA) was sent here, as one understands. We are talking when the European Parliament elections have not yet taken place, let alone the elections to the Seimas,“ she said when asked about the position she had expressed during the „I know what I am voting for“ debate. „Let's not rush these events, as I say. First, we will see the results of the European Parliament elections. On 15 June, we will have our party conference where we will approve our list of candidates for the European Parliament – a very responsible moment. There is not much time left for that. And then, as a responsible party, we will participate in the Seimas elections“, noted Blinkevičiūtė.

„Every decision must be weighed, thought out, discussed, and survived, and there will be no other way. I will not say today anyway“, the MEP added.

Nevertheless, the politician insists that she feels personally responsible for the success of the LSDP in the autumn elections. However, when asked whether, in her opinion, the Social Democrats would be able to achieve victory without the party's leader on the electoral list, Blinkevičiūtė did not answer directly.

„In one role or another, I will run with the party in the parliamentary elections. (...) And what that specific role will be – I say again, let's wait a bit,“ she said.

She has not yet received an invitation from LVŽS to discuss a shared future; she is surprised by Karbauskis' public rhetoric

After the first round of the presidential elections, the Social Democrats received public calls from the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union (LVŽS), led by Ramūnas Karbauskis, to discuss a shared political future. It seems that such statements have remained public rhetoric, as Blinkevičiūtė indicates that she has not received any invitation from the Peasants to talk.

„Have you already agreed or answered? It means there has not yet been a normal offer to cooperate“, – she states.

In general, the leader of the Social Democrats is puzzled by the way Karbauskis has chosen to communicate.

„I find it a bit strange that this was somehow thrown out in public – although I have seen a lot of things in my life, and I could be used to everything by now,“ said Blinkevičiūtė, assuring that she would meet for a chat if she received an invitation from the Chairman of the LVŽS.

„We would meet and talk, just like we do with all other party representatives or leaders,“ she said.

However, speaking about how the political puzzle in Seimas might look after the Seimas elections, Blinkevičiūtė reiterated that the Social Democrats and the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) would not work in a coalition.

„We would no longer talk to the Conservatives. They should be put on the soothing chair for the next term,“ the LSDP chair stressed.

ELTA reminds us that the Seimas elections will occur in October this year.
